As an alternative, you could choose to go in the other direction, appointing yourself the boss of everyone, but you know how that works. Think back to the last time someone just assumed top-down control of a messy challenge, handing out assignments and directing the work of everyone in the room. Rebellion or desertion likely followed close behind. Even in business environments, where top-down control is the norm for many everyday operations, it’s hard to make top-down control work when building something big and messy. A boss sending instructions from above will be too slow and too ill-informed, and the talented people receiving those directives will resent the fact that they have little to no say in the matter.

When control is centralized, there’s little expectation of individual initiative on the part of those people who are farther down in the organization. You lose the opportunity to tap their insights and creative solutions, but this is exactly the kind of support you’ll need as you work to shape and build your innovation.
